It’s Makeup Time! Tips for Teens

You want to start wearing make-up or you’ve started to experiment and your results haven’t put the smile on your face like you anticipated.

Before you run to buy a bunch of makeup let’s stop and remember that you need a good base for your makeup to sit on and some knowledge before you end up looking like a clown or zombie! Here are some Guidelines you can follow to ensure your face is makeup ready!

You can also email or call New Beginnings Salon and schedule an appointment with Sara. She will go shopping with you to help you select the right makeup and tools you will need, provide a makeup tutorial and shape your eyebrows! Sara will have all these tips, tricks and more so you can be confident in your makeup applications.

Guidelines

A little goes a long way: Do not make the mistake so many young girls make. If you apply too much makeup you will have a caked on appearance that will age you and shame you.

Watch out or you’ll look like a clown: When you’re applying blush, eye shadow, or lipstick- do not pick shades that are too vibrant or dark.

Smokey does not mean Goth or sucker-punched: On the special occasions you may want to try the Smokey eye look. Use the liners and eye shadows sparingly and instead of circling your eye and suffocating it, use a blending brush and blend, blend, blend. If you use too much or you don’t blend you’ll end up looking like you were punched in the eye or you worship the devil.

You want to look your age- not 50: If you have to wear foundation pick a light weight formula and do not bath your face in it. If you do you will add decades onto your appearance. Decades.

Your skin is at its prime- don’t cake it on: At your age you really don’t need a lot of foundations, concealers, blushes and bronzers. Take it easy on these makeups. Your skin is naturally vibrant. If you have a blemish use a bit of concealer and dab it on then use a light dusting of blush or bronzer.

If your skin is super oily – you’re naturally illuminated: You may want to avoid illuminators if you have super oily skin; you don’t really want to add any more shine to your face.

Holy browsers: I really advise going to a professional to shape your eyebrows for the first time. But if you opt out of a professional use the pencil tip. Line a pencil up to the outside of your nostril and seat it against the bridge this is where your inner part of your brow should start.

Next move the pencil top end of the pencil and line it up with the arch of your eye follow it through and this is where your arch should be shaped. And finally swing the pencil end once again to line up with the outside of your eye and if you follow the pencil up this is where your eyebrow should end. Avoid any deviation from this and do not over arch and look like your surprised all day.

Drink enough water: Nothing makes your skin healthier than drinking enough water. Dehydrated skin can become flaky, saggy and pasty.

Follow your skin regime: Find a skin regime that works for your skin type and stick with it every day. Exfoliate, cleanse, moisturize and use SPF 15 or more.

Eat your greens: Eat healthy this will make your skin visibly more vibrant.

Wear sunscreen: use a moisturizer with sunscreen in it.

Don’t suntan too much: Avoid tanning beds. This is so 1990. Use a tinted moisturizer or bronzer to add some color to your skin.

Mascara and lip gloss will do: You don’t have to wear makeup every day and you shouldn’t. Mascara and lip gloss is a great look for a young woman.

Smokey eyes OR dark lip shades: Do not wear both of these at the same time, it will make you look too dark and not in a good mysterious way.

Let’s get to the basics!

Makeup Kit

This kit will cover you for your basics all the way to prom night! Do not try to use all these items every single day. You’re young, you’re beautiful and your skin is at its prime. Don’t mask your beauty, enhance your true beauty.

BROWS

A)  Brow brush

Use this to brush your brows up/down in preparation to trim up those brows to achieve the proper angles when tweezing and waxing

B)  Tweezers

If you’re going to start wearing make-up the best way to add a frame your beautiful eye is well groomed brows. Visit a professional to shape your eyebrows and maintain the shape by using tweezers.

C)  Brow scissors

Make sure you use brow scissors not your mom’s craft scissors- those are just dangerous, dull and you could end up cutting off your whole forehead

FACE

Concealer

Use sparingly (dab don’t rub or smear) for under eye circles, blemishes, uneven skin tones and illumination.

Foundation

If you have to use foundation do not, I repeat DO NOT slather it all over your face. This is not a fix all, it can actually create the infamous caked on look. This will make you look like your 50, not 16 or 18 or 20! Your skin is brand new! Your skin is what every woman over 20 wants, so keep calm when using foundation- more is not better. A good alternative is tinted moisturizer.

Blush

Use on the apples of your cheeks for a nice pop of color. Again I stress- don’t overdo it with the blush. There is cute and blushing and then there is funny like a clown.

Illuminator powder

Avoid too much sparkle in your illuminator. Choose pearlescent shades for lighter skin shades and warmer shades for darker skin tones. Apply on the bridge of your nose, your cupids bow above your lips, top of your cheekbones, center of your chin, and the portion of your forehead between your brows.

Translucent powder

A light dusting will set your makeup and keep you naturally matte.

Bronzer

Dust bronzer around the outer edges of your face and jawline and a bit under your cheek bones to give you a summery look.

EYES

Eye lash curler

Curl your lashes before applying your mascara. This will brighten and widen your eyes for a fresh look and it will reduce the amount of mascara you need to set off your eyes.

Mascara

Define your eyes with mascara. Stick to natural blacks if your hair is darker and browns if your hair color is a lighter shade. These colors will give you more of a natural look.

Eye shadow

There are so many color palettes you can buy; choose ones that are complimentary with your eye color. Each palette you choose will come with neutral colors that you will use as a base and under the eyebrow arch.

A quick guide:

Blue eyes- gold, bronze, copper, champagne, gray-brown, slate and silvery blues.

Brown eyes- you have the pick of the colors, brown eyes are a neutral color that won’t compete with other colors. The most complimentary for brown eyed girls- warm bronze, peach, purple, teal and bronze, taupe, gold, toffee, navy, matte blue, matte green.

Hazel eyes- gray, dusty pink, burgundy, deep purple, yellow-brown, golden-khaki, taupe-gray.

Green eyes- variations of purples, sepia, rust, pink.

Eyeliner

For a softer look you can use your eyeliner brush and use the darker shade of eye shadow as a liner or a black or brown pencil. For a more dramatic look you can use liquid or gel eyeliner but be careful with these liners one wrong move and your washing your makeup off and starting over again. You can also buy a white or light eye liner pencil to line your bottom waterline to give your eyes a wider look.

LIPS

Lipstick/lip gloss

Accentuate your pout with a splash of color. You don’t want to produce a look that’s too old for your age (remember 50), so add lip gloss on top of your lipstick color to soften the color and make them shine. Or go with a tinted lip gloss, there are so many shades to choose from.

Makeup Brush Guide

Fluffy powder brush

This is a big, rounded brush that is used to dust on your powders once your makeup is complete. You can use this for your bronzer and translucent powders.

Blush brush

This brush is a bit smaller than your powder brush and works well for applying blush to the apples of your cheeks and natural contouring under your cheek bones.

 Eye shadow brush

This is an all-over brush that is on the softer side, this brush will allow you to apply an overall base of eye shadow

 Crease brush

This is a stiffer, rounded brush that is used to apply your definition eye shadow in the creases and corners of your eyes

Eyeliner brush

This is a rigid angled brush you can use to apply eyeliner and fill in the brows where needed

Eye blending brush

This has long, fluffy bristles that allow blending of the neutral and defining eye shadow colors so you have a blended eye shadow look.

Make-up case

You’re going to need a make-up case to store all these gems. When you’re picking out a make-up case make sure to select one that has a lot of compartments or storage areas so you can group them into skin, eyes, lips, cheeks and tools. This will save you a lot of time when you’re getting ready.

This kit it not a life line. You don’t need makeup, you use makeup too to give yourself that added confidence or look you want. Skip some days or use only on the weekends; you have the rest of your life to wear makeup so go slow and use sparingly.

Everyday Look

A good every day look for a young girl is: eyelash curler, mascara, a touch of blush or bronzer and some lip gloss. This routine should take you about 3 minutes max. You can start by buying these basics and slowly acquire the rest.
