Curly Hair Maintenance

July 23, 2018

I love working with curly hair since it looks so healthy and unique once it is correctly styled. Even if you are someone who has curly yet dry hair, or even frizzy hair, you will still love the outcome. It's all about using the proper technique and having the right tools.

Top 6 Golden Rules On How To Style Curly Hair

1. Don't Overdo It

Curly hair is generally super dry, so don't over wash it with shampoos, conditioners, or by using constant heat. You should wash it 1-2 a week and use mild, creamy, and moisturizing products.

Hair care wise I really love the L'Oreal Professionnel NUTRIFIER. It's silicone-free and nourishing. Its active indigence are Glycerol, which helps hydrate and also helps maintain a barrier to prevent dryness and Coconut oil that hydrates without the heaviness as well as adding shine and softness to your curls.

2. Use The Right Ingredients

The right products are those that contain no alcohol or hard chemicals. These can really dry out your hair, so rather focus on oil-based treatments, shea butter, coconut hair masks etc.

Some of my favorite brands and products to work with are:

  • Brazilian Blowout Hair Mask

  • ORIBE 's Gold Lust Transformative Masque

  • L'Oreal Professionnel's Mythic Oil Masque.

3. Pat Dry

I prefer using cotton towels or even cotton shirts on my clients since cotton removes the water gently. Rubbing your hair with a rough towel will just create an unwanted and uneven frizz. Once you pick up the excess water with your shirt or cotton towel, leave your hair to air dry.

4. Use a Diffuser

I believe that flipping your head upside down will just prolong the lifespan of your curls and leave them looking defined. Plus, once you add the diffuser, it is the ideal combo!

Place the diffuser on your scalp and work it all the way down to your ends. Also, don't try brushing your hair. Brushes will remove curls and just create frizz. Only use a tooth comb after you shower and while your hair is still wet in order to detangle it. The T3 blwodyers have diffusers for all their dryers, is my go to dryer!

5. Turn Down the Hot Water

Even though hot/warm water does feel nice on the scalp and on your skin, it is not highly recommended since it removes the moisture. However, cold water shuts cuticles which lock in moisture while leaving your hair shiny and frizz free.

6. Satin Is The Key

Even though this is not something that I can offer at my salon, I always tell my clients to sleep on the comfiest sheets that they own. For instance, satin pillowcases are the best option since satin can’t move or break your hair around and it will keep your curls intact.
